F-101 "Project Eclipse" Aircraft and Flight Crew, October 1959

F-101B Voodoo "Project Eclipse" with Irv Burrows and Jack Hereford on McDonnell Aircraft flight ramp in St. Louis, MO. The B model featured a cockpit modified for a crew of two, a larger forward fuselage for an improved radar, larger engines, and carried air-to-air missiles instead of cannons. Top speed was Mach 1.85. 479 F-101Bs were deleivered to air forces in the US and Canada.

"Project Eclipse" was a program proposed by MCAIR for the measurement of coronal polarization during total eclipse of 2 Oct 1959. Polarization measurements were made from an F-101B airplane flying along the central line of the eclipse total phase in the vicinity of the Canary Islands.
