McDonnell Whirlaway leaders pose

During the 1940s, James McDonnell became interested in rotorcraft and formed a helicopter division within the McDonnell Aircraft Corp. to become a major player in this new aviation sector.

Larger than any helicopter then in existence, and the first with two engines, the XHJD-1 Whirlaway made its first hover flight on April 27, 1946.
