McDonnell XHJD-1 Whirlaway on test flight in 1947. The Whirlaway was the world’s first successful twin-engine, twin-rotor helicopter.

The notable feature of this design was a side-by-side rotor arrangement using two engines, one for each counter-rotating rotor.
