AT-6/SNJ Texan Trainer in Flight
The rugged AT-6 Texan (Harvard) trainers served with American military services for 25 years and in more than 30 other countries. North American Aviation built more than 15,800 Texans and SNJs (the Navy version), beginning in 1938 with the first NA-49 Harvard for the British Royal Air Force. They began delivering the AT-6 to the U.S. Army Air Corps on Feb. 10, 1940. With a wingspan of 42 feet, the trainers, powered by a 550-horsepower engine, could fly 205 mph.
