A-4 Skyhawk on Runway

The A4D/A-4 Skyhawk light attack bomber made its first flight on June 22, 1954. It had numerous nicknames - Heinemann’s Hot Rod (after Douglas designer Ed Heinemann), the Bantam Bomber, Mighty Mite, and Scooter. Douglas built 2,960 Skyhawk between 1954 and 1979. The Navy’s Blue Angels flight demonstration squadron flew the single-engine A-4 Skyhawk II from 1974 to 1986. The Skyhawk was scheduled to remain active with several air forces into the 2000s.
