Three-Views of Boeing's C-5 Proposal

In the 1960s, Boeing competed with other aerospace companies to win the U.S. Army's Request for Proposal for a new large military transport, the CX-HLS, or Cargo Experimental-Heavy Logistics System. Boeing was one of three companies whose proposal was selected for further study. Although Boeing's design did not win the competition, Boeing then set out to out to develop a large advanced commercial airplane to take advantage of the high bypass engine technology developed for the C-5A, the 747.
