Model 100 series airplanes were developed as commercial and export derivative versions of the F4B/P-12 Model 83-89 fighter. The U.S. Bureau of Air Commerce, a precurser to the Federal Aviation Agency, bought the first Model 100, and a special two-seat 100A was built for Howard Hughes.
