CH-47A Chinook Helicopter Loads a XM-571 APC at Fort Bragg, NC
A United States Army CH-47A Chinook, produced by The Boeing Company's Vertol Division, demonstrated its versatility as the U.S. Army's standard medium helicopter when it participated in a series of compatibility tests with an XM-571 articulated personnel carrier at Fort-Bragg, North Carolina in the 1960s. The XM-571 is a light land vehicle designed to carry payloads of 2,000 pounds over virtually all types of terrain under the most adverse weather conditions. Gross weight of the vehicle and its cargo during the compatibility tests totaled over 7,500 pounds. Shown above is the XM-571 being backed into the Chinook's straight-in rear loading ramp. In another test, the tandem-rotor helicopter air lifted the vehicle on its 16,000 pound capacity cargo hook, released the XM-571 from the hook, allowing the vehicle to descend by parachute.
