X-53A Active Aeroelastic Wing (AAW) Test Flight
The X-53A Active Aeroelastic Wing (AAW) flight research project conducted by NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and Boeing Phantom Works, researched a high-tech adaptation of the Wright Brothers rudimentary ‘wing-warping’ approach to aircraft flight control. The project began in 1996 and was completed in 2005. The information gained in the project can be applied to a wide range of future aircraft designs.
