Two North American Aviation P-51 Mustangs, piloted by US Army flyers Col. Clair Peterson and Lt. Col. Jack Carter, broke all previous transcontinental speed records on May 12, 1944 when they flew from Los Angeles to New York in six and thirty-one and one-half minutes, at an average speed of 378 miles an hour for the 2,470-mile flight.
