P-51B/C Mustang and A-36A Invader Striking Ground Targets

Although first designed for the British as a medium-altitude fighter, the Mustang excelled in hedge-hopping strafing runs and long-range escort duty.

The pairing of the P-51 airframe and Packard-Merlin V-1650 engine was designated P-51B or P-51C. B (NA-102) being manufactured at Inglewood, Calif., and C (NA-103) at Dallas, Texas. The P-51Bs and Cs started to arrive in England in August and October 1943.

The A-36 Invader was a modified design of the P-51 to serve as a dive bomber for ground attack.
