Douglas Long Beach Plant Under Construction
Douglas opened the first of the nation's "Defense Plants" at Long Beach. The facility covered nearly 1.5 million square feet. Fully designed for war time production, the first-of-its-kind air conditioned plant had no windows and most entrances and receiving bays were accessible only through double, light-proof doors. Each structure was equipped with back-up utility services and had its own underground storage and bomb shelter.
