Boeing 767-400ER in Wind Tunnel Testing
June 26, 1997 - Inside the Boeing Transonic Wind Tunnel in Seattle, WA, an engineer takes readings from the 767-400ER (extended range) airplane model. In the final series of high-speed wind tunnel tests, Boeing evaluated wing extensions, winglets and raked tips, all of which increase the 767-400ER wing span. The tests proved that the highly swept, 8-foot raked tips gave the best overall configuration for improved airplane takeoff performance and better range and fuel burn. A model configured for low-speed analysis will complete testing this month in the Defense Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) wind tunnel facility in Farnborough, England.
