The Composite Experience
747-400 Dreamlifter LCF B-Roll March 2014
The Boeing Dreamlifter is a modified 747-400 passenger airplane that can haul more cargo by volume than any airplane in the world. It is the primary means of transporting major assemblies of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner from suppliers around the world to the 787 Dreamliner final assembly sites in Everett, Washington and Charleston, South Carolina.
The most significant change to the 747-400 Large Cargo Freighter airplane is the large extended upper fuselage, which boosts the cargo capacity by volume to 65,000 cubic feet, more than three times the cargo capacity of a standard 747-400 freighter.
The fleet of four Dreamlifters ferry 787 assemblies between Nagoya, Japan, Grottaglie, Italy, Wichita, Kansas, and the Boeing factories in Everett, Washington, and Charleston, South Carolina. The first two LCFs entered service in early 2007, the third in 2008, and the fourth in 2010.
