The X-31 was conceived as a multipurpose, agile fighter-type aircraft capable of operating in controlled flight well below stall speed, yet possessing supersonic capability. Germany, Sweden, and the U.S. plan to jointly return the X-31 experimental aircraft to flying status to demonstrate technologies of vectored thrust, extremely short takeoff and landing, and tailless flight.
