T-45A Goshawk Carrier Qualifications, USS Kennedy, CV-67
The T-45 Training System is the first totally integrated training program developed for the U.S. Navy. It includes flight simulators, computer-assisted instruction, and contractor-provided logistics support. At the heart of the system is the T-45 Goshawk aircraft, which replaces both the North American T-2C Buckeye and the Douglas TA-4J Skyhawk naval jet trainers. The T-45 is a modified version of Britain’s Royal Air Force Hawk trainer. The T-45A made its first flight on April 16, 1988. Deliveries began in 1992 and flight training in 1994. Boeing and British Aerospace share production of the T-45, with final assembly at Boeing facilities in St. Louis. The latest version, the T-45C, has a digital cockpit. It made its first flight in October 1997. The new cockpit is similar to those used in current Navy aircraft, and will better prepare pilots for flying the F/A-18 Super Hornet, the AV-8B Harrier II Plus and other next generation fighters. Boeing delivered the 221st and final T-45 training jet to the U.S. Navy in November 2009.
