Engine Installation Mail Plane 40-A

The Model 40A was a redesigned and updatded version of the Model 40. The 40A used an air-cooled Pratt & Whitney Wasp engine that was about 200 pounds lighter than the water-cooled engines used on the Model 40. The lightness of the Wasp engine allowed the 40A to carry a larger payload and made it less expensive to operate than its competitors.
