Boeing Phantom Ray On Maiden Flight
Phantom Ray, Boeing’s fighter-sized unmanned airborne system, took to the air April 27, 2011 over the California skies at NASA’s Dryden Research Center, successfully accomplishing its first flight. The 17-minute flight took place following a series of high-speed taxi tests in March 2011 that validated ground guidance, navigation and control and verified mission planning, pilot interface and operational procedures. Phantom Ray flew to 7,500 feet and reached a speed of 178 knots. Operating autonomously, the unmanned aircraft completed its flight path and returned safely.
