The design team that developed the B-52 Stratofortress reenacting what has become known as the "Dayton Weekend." In October 1948, the Boeing team presented a turboprop design for the B-52 to U.S. Air Force Colonel Pete Warden, who suggested the team redesign the airplane into a swept-wing all-jet design like the B-47 Stratojet. It was a Friday, and he gave the team until Monday to come up with a new design. Over the weekend, the team of (left to right) George Schairer, Vaughn Blumenthal, Maynard Pennell, Ed Wells, Art Carlsen, and Bob Withington (not pictured in this photo) worked on the new design. Schairer made a balsa wood model, and Ed Wells led the development of a 33 page proposal. After seeing the model and the proposal, Colonel Warden said, "Now we have an airplane. This is the B-52." After more than half a century, the model is preserved in the Boeing Archives and the U.S. Air Force is still flying the B-52.
