Boeing 707 on Tarmac in Baltimore Following Record Setting Flight, 1957
The Boeing 707 set a North American transcontinental speed record for passenger flight on March 11, 1957. The jet powered airliner flew from Seattle, WA to Baltimore, MD in 3 hours, 48 minutes, with 42 passengers and a crew of 10.
The 707-120 had a cruising speed of 600 mph and a range of 3,000 miles.
Boeing developed the larger 707-320 Intercontinental series with a longer fuselage, bigger wing and higher-powered engines. With these improvements, the 707 had truly intercontinental range of over 4,000 miles in a 141-seat (mixed class) seating configuration.
The long-range version of the Boeing 707-320 intercontinental became the most commonly ordered version of the 707 airliner. Its fuselage was 8 feet longer than the 707-120 and its wingspan was 12 feet longer.
