As a CH-47F Chinook makes its way down the production line at Boeing Military Aircraft’s production facility near Philadelphia, the rotorcraft is fitted with the all-new Cargo On/Off Loading System (COOLS). Up to 170 new F-models will be fitted with the upgrade. In addition, the U.S. Army will retrofit the entire current CH-47F fleet. COOLS enables rapid reconfiguration of the helicopter’s floor to convert it from a troop mission to a cargo mission. What used to take several hours can now be done in-flight and within 15 minutes by one person in full military gear. The design is the result of requests made by soldiers in the field.
