F-86D Sabre Jet Aerial Rocket Firing

More than 6,000 F-86s were manufactured by North American's Los Angeles, CA, and Columbus, Ohio, divisions. The F-86Ds, pitured here, was an all-weather interceptor version of the F-86. In 1952, a F-86D broke the world speed record, flying at 698 mph, bettering the old mark of 570 mph set by the F-86A in 1948. The "D" became the first model of a fighter to better its own record, in 1953, with a run of 715 mph.
