U.S. Navy Cmdr. Phillip "Rowdy" Yates, the U.S. government's lead test pilot for the Boeing JSF program, uses a Fresnel lens on the ground to provide pilot cues during his approach to a simulated carrier deck outline on the runway. The flight was the X-32A's 18th. The X-32A is demonstrating both the carrier variant (CV) and conventional takeoff and handling (CTOL) qualities without any modifications or changes to the aircraft.
