J-2 Thrust Chamber Production Line

January 18, 1966 Press Release: This is the production line for thrust chambers of hydrogen-fueled J-2 rocket engine that will launch first orbital flights of three astronauts in Apollo spacecraft, later will fly the spacecraft on its journey to the moon. J-2 develops 200,000 pounds of thrust. It is being produced at Canoga, Calif. plant of Rocketdyne, a division of North American Aviation, Inc., for NASA's Marshall Space flight Center. A single J-2 will power the S-IVB stage being built by Douglas Aircraft Company for the second stage of the Saturn IB vehicle and the third stage of Saturn V. Five J-2's will be used to produce 1,000,000 pounds of thrust in the S-II stage being built by North American's Space and Information systems Division for the second stage of the Saturn V moon-launch vehicle.
