Batmobile B-17 at the Cayuse Saddle Fire
Postwar B-17 conversions included B-17s as trainers, VIP transports, radio-controlled targets for missile tests, as well as for search and rescue, anti-submarine manuevers, and reconnaissance. In this painting by Jay Mullins, pilot Jay LeRoux is commemorated for his efforts to combat the Cayuse Saddle Fire outdside of Missoula, Montana in 1979. LeRoux made three effective drops on the fire in the "Batmobile" when he made a wrong turn and caught the aircraft's wing in the trees and crashed. Both LeRoux and his co-pilot were killed.
