Space Shuttle Main Engine #0001 undergoes static test at NASA's National Space Technology Laboratories, Bay St. Louis, Missouri, one of 67 tests conducted by Rocketdyne on this engine during a 14-month period. A total of 400 seconds of test time was accrued. Longest single test was for a duration of 60 seconds. Contract with NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center calls for SSMEs to operate for 55 missions between overhauls. Three of the main engines being developed and produced by Rockwell International's Rocketdyne Division for the Space Shuttle will generate 470,000 pounds of thrust to power the manned orbiter stage of the vehicle.
