Orbital Carryall - NASA's Space Shuttle orbiter's mid-fuselage - a 60 foot long (18.28 meters), 15 foot diameter (4.57 meters) cargo bay with the capability of housing 65,000 lbs (29,484 kilograms) of spacecraft, satellites, and laboratories - is shown undergoing final structural assembly at the U.S. Air Force Plant #42 in Palmdale, California in 1975. Under contract to the Space Division of Rockwell International Corporation, the cargo bay was built by General Dynamics in San Diego, California.
