Camouflaged Plant II
During WWII, a 26-acre make-believe village was constructed on top of Boeing's Plant II in Seattle to provide a wartime cover for the facility. This camouflage scheme for the plant also extended out over neighboring Boeing Field. Continuing the residential-suburb pattern of the factory roof, Boeing Field's camouflage outlined a more sparsely settled community. The roads - dark strips of oil-soaked earth - extended across the airstrips and up the side of Beacon Hill. The "houses" were painted slabs of concrete, about six inches high. Real grass helped to complete the residential effect. The make-believe roads on the side of the hill were simply swaths cut through low brush. Around Boeing Field, vegetable gardens were burlap-garnished wire on stone facings and the use of infra-red paint gave trees an evergreen appearance.
