B-17D Flying Fortresss Outside Boeing Factory

The Boeing B-17D Flying Fortress was the first Fortress to utilize self-healing fuel tanks, more armor protection and increased armament dictated by experiences of the RAF fighting in Germany. The B-17D also had larger engines equipped with cowl-flaps which permitted better cooling in fast climbs. Airplanes of this type were used in early fighting against the Japanese in the Pacific.
