Multifunction Electronic Display Subsystem (MEDS)
HONEYWELL ARTIST'S RENDERING of the Multifunction Electronic Display Subsystem, which will replace cathode ray tube screens, mechanical gauges and instruments in America's Space Shuttle cockpits with full-color, flat-panel displays like those on modern commercial andmilitary aircraft. MEDS will reduce Shuttle maintenance costs, help avoid obsolescence issues, reduce vehicle weight and power consumption, improve Shuttle reliability and performance and iscapable of expansion. Atlantis will be the first orbiter to receive MEDS during its maintenance period at the Boeing Palmdale, Calif. facility now through August 1998.
