Navy P2B-1S Mothership Modified for Launching a D-558-2 Skyrocket
Although the D-558-2 could take off using its jet engine, this limited the aircraft's altitude and speed. To solve this problem, the D-558-2 was converted to a combined jet and rocket propulsion, and was airdropped from a P2B-1S (the Navy's designation for the specially modified B-29). This drop plane was nicknamed "Fertile Myrtle."
