B-17G Flying Fortresses on the Flight Line at Boeing Field

In 1934, Boeing was the first company to respond to a U.S. Army request for a large, multi-engine bomber. The first B-17 made its first flight on December 2, 1936. The Boeing, Douglas, and Lockheed Vega companies eventually built 12,731 B-17s.
