X-40A Space Maneuver Vehicle (SMV) in Flight Atop 747

First flown in August 1998, the X-40A Space Maneuver Vehicle (SMV) is an instrumented X-vehicle that supports the flight dynamics of the similarly shaped X-37. In the early 2000s, the X-40A SMV performed a series of successful free flight tests, flying to autonomous landings after being lifted to an altitude of 15,000 feet by a Chinook helicopter and released.
