In the 1980s, the 747-400 was launched with a new interior that was the result of significant redesigning to improve passenger conveniences and overall appeal. Ceiling and sidewall panels were recontoured with new, lighter materials that created a greater feeling of spaciousness and were easier to maintain. These imporvements were continually refined and applied to other Boeing passenger planes.
