US Air Force, Navy, Marines and F-4 Phantom IIs Flying in Formation
The McDonnell Douglas-built F-4 Phantom II was the first fighter to serve the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. The supersonic Phantom II was a multi-mission air superiority fighter, fighter/bomber, advanced interceptor, group support, tactical strike and reconnaissance aircraft. It entered combat for the first time in 1964 when the U.S. Navy used Phantom IIs as fighter escorts on the first U.S. raid against North Vietnam. Twenty-seven years later, the aircraft were used in Operation Desert Storm to destroy Iraqi radars. Later, F-4s carried out allied military strikes on Iraq in Operation Southern Watch. The F-4 Phantom has served the military forces of 10 other countries. McDonnell Douglas produced 5,057 Phantom IIs.
