The KDC-10 is an advanced tanker/cargo aircraft designed to provide rapid, worldwide force projection for the armed services. Two DC-10-30-CFs underwent modification to become Royal Netherlands Air Force KDC-10s. The aircraft's telerobotic refueling system is equipped with television cameras to provide three-dimensional displays of inflight refueling operations tot he refueling operator. This advanced technology system was a key element in a design and modification contract awarded to McDonnell Douglas by the U.S. Air Force as part of a Foreign Military Sales program. Modifications work to convert the DC-10-30-CF commercial aircraft into military tanker-transports was conducted for McDonnell Douglas by KLM Engineering and Maintenance, a unit of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, at the air carrier's maintenance facilities near Amsterdam.
