Rear Gunner's Station, Specially Configurred Model 247-Y
Hailed as the first modern airliner, the Boeing 247 of 1933 marked the emergence of fast, comfortable air travel. This sleek, all-metal monoplane carried 10 passengers at 160 mi/h (260 km/h). Early Model 247s had a distinctive reverse-slope windshield. Boeing installed normal windshields on the later 247Ds as well as hydraulically controlled Hamilton Standard propellers. These improvements raised the 247s cruising speed from 155 to 189 mph, and its range went from 185 to 745 miles. The 247Ds remained in airline service until America's entry into World War II when a number of them were drafted into the Army as transports and trainers under the designation of C-73.
