RA-5C Vigilante on the Tarmac at Kittyhawk
North American's Mach 2 carrier-based bomber, the Vigilante, on Dec. 31, 1961, set an altitude record of 91,450 feet with a 2,402-pound payload. North American built 179 Vigilantes. Redesignated the A-5, the Vigilante's first full deployment was in August 1962 with the inaugural cruise of the Navy's first nuclear aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise. In 1964, the Vigilantes were reconfigured as RA-5C reconnaissance aircraft and served during the Vietnam War.
