The pairing of the P-51 airframe and Packard-Merlin V-1650 engine was designated P-51B or P-51C. B (NA-102) being manufactured at Inglewood, Calif., and C (NA-103) at Dallas, Texas. The P-51Bs and Cs started to arrive in England in August and October 1943.
By the end of 1943, P-51 Mustang fighters in service had gone from 57 to 1,165, and by the end of June 1945, 5,595 were in battle across the globe.
