It was the only jet airplane designed specifically for aerial refueling and for 15 years was the only tanker used by the Strategic Air Command. The KC-135 replaced the propeller-powered KC-97 tankers, which could no longer keep up with the jet fighters and bombers. In 1956, when the first KC-135 -- nicknamed "The City of Renton" -- rolled out of the plant, it shared the Renton tarmac with the last KC-97, providing a vivid picture of The Boeing Company's complete conversion to jet power.BI4791 (p17089)Maximum size:5417px × 6862px (~106 MB)18.0in × 22.8in (300dpi)License type:Rights ManagedKeywords:1950s-B-52 Stratofortress (Model 464)-crowds-Dash 80 (Model 367-80)-day-flying in formation-full body views-glare-historic production status-KC-135 Stratotanker-KC-97 Stratotanker-Lake Washington-left side views-refueling-Renton Assembly Plant-rollout ceremonies-sunshine-viewed from aboveRelated Photo/Videos:View AllRelated Virtual folders:KC-135 Stratotanker
