HC-1B (CH-47) Chinook on Tarmac With C-133A Cargomaster Transport Aircraft
A Boeing Vertol HC-1B Chinook helicopter is shown maneuvering to a waiting United States Air Force Military Air Transport Service (MATS) C-133A Cargomaster. The Chinook was loaded on board the Cargomaster for airlift delivery to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio in 1961. The engines, rotors, transmission systems and pylons were removed from the Chinook before loading. At Wright-Patterson, the Chinook underwent a static test program conducted for the United States Army by the Structural Test Laboratory, Aeronautical Systems Division, United States Air Force. Purposes of the static test program included: substantiation that the airframe and major components had sufficient static strength to withstand the ultimate flight loads of the current design; verification that the Chinook could be operated safely without flight restrictions and determination of the extent of growth potential possessed by the basic Chinook design.
