HC-1B (CH-47) Chinook Helicopter at the Pentagon Heliport
August 9, 1962. The United States Army has received delivery of its first HC-1B Chinook helicopter. This twin-turbine aircraft, one of a quantity on order at The Boeing Company's Vertol Division, was delivered to the Army Aviation Board at Fort Rucker, Alabama. Enroute to Alabama, the Chinook stopped at the Pentagon Heliport (above) for static display and flight demonstration. Stops were also made at Fort Belvoir, Fort Eustis, Fort Bragg and Fort Benning. The HC-1B Chinook is being procured by the U.S. Army through the U.S. Air Force Aeronautical Systems Division, Dayton, Ohio, and will replace present piston-driven helicopters. A number of the aircraft are presently undergoing flight testing at the Vertol Division's Flight Test Center, Philadelphia International Airport. A static testing program is underway at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base along with cold weather environmental testing at Eglin Air Force Base.
