Desgin Study for Vertol Model 167

In the 1960s, Boeing's Vertol Division released advanced designs of two helicopters then being studied for inter city and airport to center city transportation. A major feature of the two new helicopters, according to Boeing engineers, was that operating costs per seat mile were to be about half that of helicopters then in service. The model 167 (shown here) differed from Boeing helicopters of the time, in that the engines were mounted on the forward, rather than the aft pylon. With a gross weith of 50,600 pounds, the 167 was to carry up to 72 passengers at a cruise speed of 185 mph. Powered by three Lycoming T55-1-11 engines, it was scheduled to be available in 1969.
