When the Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957, the newly created NASA organization asked Douglas-Tulsa if they could build a rocket capable of putting something into orbit quick. By adding a second and third stage to the Thor rocket, the Delta rocket was created. Once the program was proven successful, the Delta program was moved to California.
