Delta Launch Vehicle Second Stage
When the Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957, the newly created NASA organization asked Douglas-Tulsa if they could build a rocket capable of putting something into orbit quick. By adding a second and third stage to the Thor rocket, the Delta rocket was created. Once the program was proven successful, the Delta program was moved to California. This photo shows the rocket’s second stage.
