Boeing Multiline Manufacturing System for B-17 Production, circa 1943

In the early 1940s, Boeing solved the the problem of greatly increased orders for the B-17 Flying Fortress by devising a "multiline production" system to better utilize factory floor space, labor, and equipment. Major portions of the B-17 were pre-assembled and brought to the final assembly area to be joined with the main structure.
