601HP Satellite, PAS-5, in Assembly
The first of Hughes' HS 601HP satellites, PAS-5 built for PanAmSat Corporation, is shown being prepared for a test in the Integrated Satellite Factory. The HP, or high-power, versions offer as much as double the power at beginning of life (10 kilowatts) of a baseline HS 601 satellite, already the world's most popular large satellite design. Among the enhancements for the HS 601HP version are solar panels covered with gallium arsenide, seen here folded against the spacecraft. PAS-5 is also the first Hughes commercial spacecraft to carry a xenon ion propulsion system (XIPS), which can be seen as a canister-like apparatus below the solar panel. The satellite will be used primarily for direct-to-home television services in Latin America and other television and telecommunications services in the Americas and Europe.
