Boeing built the rocket’s massive S-1C first stage, North American the S-II second stage, and McDonnell Douglas the S-IVB third stage. Rocketdyne built the first stage’s five F-1 engines and the J-2 engine for the rocket’s second and third stages. Twelve Saturn Vs were used on the Apollo moon exploration program, and the 13th, in 1973, placed the McDonnell Douglas Skylab into Earth orbit.
